Yahoo! (http://photos.yahoo.com) and Wal-Mart (http://www.walmart.com) are more akin to online coffee tables. Users are encouraged to share their photos with friends and family, who can post comments and order prints of their own.

Kodak’s oFoto service (http://www.ofoto.com) lets customers order prints for themselves, giving them access to photos friends might not otherwise see. Customers with traditional, film-based cameras need not be left out of the fun — they can scan their pictures onto their computers, or simply send in the film for developing.

Most sites allow users to share and store a limited number of their photos for free, hoping that users will buy prints or other items. Some sites offer additional storage space or other features to members willing to pay for them. Users can often also order calendars, greeting cards, key-chains, T-shirts, coffee mugs and even mouse pads emblazoned with their selected images.
